Its main application is new systems for medium and low refrigeration temperatures. Theoretical cooling capacity is 5% lower than R-502 at evaporating temperatures of -40ºC. The coefficient of performance (COP) is approximately 5 to 8% lower than R-502. If superheat increases, the COP of R-404A may be higher than that of R-502. In the case of retrofits of R-502 and its HCFC substitutes (R-408A, DI-44), it is necessary to eliminate 95% of the original mineral or alkylbenzene oil, replacing it with a polyol ester oil, change the filter drier, the expansion valve, the rubber O-rings with the plastic ones and in some cases oversize the condenser. In the event that it is used as a retrofit to R-22, it will also be necessary to replace the relief valves and other items rated for the R-22 pressures.
