European legislation
The European Regulation n. 517/2014 imposes a drastic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, with a reduction target of 79% by 2030.
To achieve this ambitious goal, various methods of intervention have been identified: Placing F-Gases on the market.
The European Regulation imposes a progressive reduction of F-Gas (HFC), expressed in Tons of CO2 equivalent, released into the territory of the European Union.
From 1.1.2020, the use in maintenance of gases with GWP > 2,500 will be prohibited, in systems with a charge > 40 tons CO2 equivalent (about 10.2 kg of HFC R-404A), with the following exceptions:
- Installations for military use;
- Refrigeration systems for products at temperatures below -50°C (BBT);
- Use of gas recovered from the plants and correctly regenerated (the ban on the use of regenerated gas will also take effect from 1.1.2030).
The main application of R404A gas is new systems for medium and low refrigeration temperatures. Theoretical cooling capacity is 5% lower than R-502 at evaporating temperatures of -40ºC. The coefficient of performance (COP) is approximately 5 to 8% lower than R-502. If superheat increases, the COP of R-404A may be higher than that of R-502. In the case of retrofits of R-502 and its HCFC substitutes (R-408A, DI-44), it is necessary to eliminate 95% of the original mineral or alkylbenzene oil, replacing it with a polyol ester oil, change the filter drier, the expansion valve, the rubber O-rings with the plastic ones and in some cases oversize the condenser. In the event that it is used as a retrofit to R-22, it will also be necessary to replace the relief valves and other items rated for the R-22 pressures.
